Andy Bautz, MA, LMFT
One of my favorite quotes was by a man named Viktor Frankl. He said, “Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom.” Though there are many items that contribute to our growth and our freedom, I love that we as people have been given the ability to make choices every day. One of the parts of being a therapist that I love the most is being able to walk alongside people as they make choices, learn, unlearn, grow, heal, and find freedom. It truly is an honor to form relationships, laugh, cry, be angry, and be creative as we explore health, healing, and hope together.
My first experience in this profession was working with the re-entry court program in Marion, IN. As an undergraduate intern, I was able to work and learn under the training of a case manager and his team. I loved working with addictions, thinking patterns, and a group of people who are stereotyped and often depersonalized due to having a criminal background. My next opportunity came at the onset of graduate school where I had the pleasure of working as a direct care staff at a juvenile residential treatment facility. I love working with kids and families and I learned so much from being on the front lines with young juveniles. I was offered and opportunity to be a case manager and truly was honored by the opportunity to represent kids and families in court, alongside DCS, and also in collaboration with probation.
Post graduate school, I had the amazing opportunity to work at one of the most reputable counseling agencies in Indiana as an outpatient counselor. There is something truly special that occurs when communities bind together to support each other and work for the greater good of its members. So many people have unique gifts and talents. It is special to see people discover and flourish within them.
Life truly is a journey full of many opportunities and choices. From leading mission trips in West Virginia to experiencing new cultures in Venezuela, I’m amazed as I look back on the choices and experiences that have molded me. One of my passions as a counselor is to help those find hope, health, and healing as they navigate their life’s journey, whatever it includes. I believe in striving to be whole in all facets of our lives. My goal is to encourage and help anyone I meet to find biological, psychological, social, and spiritual health. All people deserve to be treated and empowered with dignity and respect. We all have worth and value. I cherish and am grateful for the privilege of helping people realize that. I would love to work with you or have you work with anyone here at TPI!
